The Oak Log / Summer 2007

Every year since 1994, kids at the Lake Champlain Waldorf School have been inspired to challenge themselves physically and raise sponsorship money for nature. Now in its 14th year, this “Run for the Rainforest” was started by teacher JoAnne Dennee and administrator Pam Graham. It has raised a phenomenal $7,800 dollars for the Conservancy’s conservation work around the world, helping to protect 1,400 acres of wildlife habitat. The proceeds from this year’s run will be directed to our work in Africa.

The Lake Champlain Waldorf School embraces environmental education and encourages a nascent conservation ethic in each of their students. Kids are introduced at an early age to the sights and sounds of migrating songbirds and are later encouraged to interact with local nature by volunteering with Conservancy staff at the nearby LaPlatte River Marsh Natural Area. In the high school years, students study geological and scientific phenomena and come to grips with the hard facts of environmental destruction and the impacts of their personal decisions.

Many of the students who have participated in the run have gone on to travel internationally. A few have chosen to work in conservation. And, in the words of one student, every one of them carries with them an appreciation of their place in the natural world and their responsibility for its protection.
