A Great Moab Rim Restoration Week

    FEBRUARY 6-11th 2006

What Is the Moab Rim?

In the spring of 2005, The Nature Conservancy purchased the Moab Rim property adjacent to the Matheson Wetlands Preserve. Rising from the valley floor to the spectacular sandstone escarpment high above Moab, this 160-acre parcel supports critical plant and animal habitat, and offers a variety of recreational opportunities.  Learn More.

Why Did We Restore It?

The Moab Rim’s proximity to town, and its huge popularity as a hiking, biking and jeeping site have made it a favorite for locals and visitors alike.  Inappropriate use over the years has taken its toll on this naturally beautiful spot.  There are also structures remaining on the property from its earlier incarnation as an “adventure park”.  Restoring this area to a more natural state benefits the plants and animals that rely on this area for habitat but and it also makes the Rim a more pleasant destination for those who use it for recreation.

How Did We Restore It?

Moab Restoration Week was a collaborative effort between The Nature Conservancy and the Bureau of Land Management. A trained crew broke down the existing structures and volunteers and Conservancy staff helped to remove debris and perform other important restorative tasks, including:

  • Marking designated jeeping and biking routes with dashed lines
  • Restoring inappropriate biking routes by moving rocks, raking dirt and placing flexible closed trail signs in appropriate places.
  • Building fences
  • Dismantling biking jumps
  • Stacking lumber for removal by jeeps
  • Removing inappropriate paint

Moab Rim Still Needs Support
