Fort Hood Project

Black-capped Vireo Research and Monitoring

The Nature Conservancy monitors and studies the Black-capped Vireo population on Fort Hood.  In five intensively studied areas on post, Conservancy scientists annually locate and monitor nests, band adults and nestlings, and conduct counts at fixed points to estimate population trends.  In 2004, a new point count methodology was tested which may allow for the first time an estimate of the total population on the installation.  Since black-capped vireo management began in 1993, nest success (percent of nests which produce a fledgling) has increased from 10% to 50%, indicating that management actions taken by The Nature Conservancy are paying off.
