Davis Mountains Preserve (in West Texas near Fort Davis)

The 32,000-acre Davis Mountains Preserve will open to the public for hiking, trail riding, backpacking and other outdoor activities. Come visit one of the jewels of West Texas and explore these "sky islands" rising from the Chihuahuan Desert Trail. No reservations are required.

Numerous trails are available for self-guided hiking. No open fires are permitted and participants are asked to follow a leave-no-trace policy, packing out all trash. Pets are not allowed on the preserve. Four-wheel drive vehicles are welcome on designated roads only. All vehicles must be road legal. ATVs are not allowed on the preserve. Mountain biking is allowed on the visitor accessible portions of the preserve road system. No off-road biking is allowed.

Fee: free and open to the public

Directions:  From Fort Davis take Hwy 118 north. About 10 miles north of the University of Texas McDonald Observatory is the Lawrence E. Wood picnic area. The Preserve gate is about one-quarter mile north of the picnic area, on the left. There is a small Nature Conservancy sign on the gate. Please sign in at the McIvor Conservation Center.
