Mark’s Trip: Peachtree Rock

Visit “the rock” that’s poised on its point and marvel at the balance of nature for starters. Then hike the trails at this preserve near Columbia in Lexington County. Peachtree Rock is home to the only waterfall in the sandhills and one of the few places you’ll find the federally endangered Rayner’s blueberry. Find directions and other information online at nature.org/southcarolina.

Spring 08

Mark’s Trip: Jocassee Gorges

Hike these forest coves to see a floral show in spring: native wildflowers include trilliums, orchids and many species not found anywhere else. At Devil’s Fork State Park from mid-March to early April, you can see Oconee bells in bloom. They grow only in the Jocassee area and a few North Carolina counties. Devil’s Fork State Park is located on the shores of Lake Jocassee off SC 11. Learn more at www.southcarolinaparks.com.

Mark’s Trip: Savannah River Bluffs Heritage Preserve

The Savannah River Bluffs Heritage Preserve consists of over 83 acres just outside the city limits of North Augusta in Aiken County. With over 1,000 feet of river frontage on one of the few remaining river shoals of the Savannah River, the preserve has rock formations thought to be remnants of ancient Native American fishing weirs. The preserve is open year-round from dawn to dusk. For additional information visit www.dnr.sc.gov or call (803) 734-3886.
