Winyah Bay Bioreserve Land Steward

Furman holds a BA in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina and has recently moved to Plantersville, South Carolina, on the Great Pee Dee River, just ten minutes by boat from his "office" on Sandy Island. He is a retired businessman, having specialized in the marine industry for 25 years. After retirement he worked with the USDA in entomology research. Furman joined TNC in 1997 and works with the protection and stewardship staff throughout the Winyah Bay Project area. He brings to TNC extensive knowledge in the areas of wildlife and waterfowl management. Furman’s primary responsibility is the management of the Sandy Island Preserve, where he also serves as a commissioned law enforcement officer with Georgetown Sheriff's Department.
