 KRISTEN AUSTIN

SBR Project Director

Kristen is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee and holds a BA in Environmental Studies and Religious Studies from the University of Tennessee. Kristen began her career in conservation in 1994 as an environmental educator teaching in the Smoky Mountain National Park at a residential field school, which focuses on the Park's natural and cultural history. She also taught environmental and outdoor education in northern California and YMCA Camp Greenville.

Kristen joined The Nature Conservancy staff over ten years ago. She first worked for the Missouri Chapter in St. Louis as the statewide volunteer coordinator for two years and then moved to southwest Missouri to open the Wah' Kon-Tah Prairie Project. She worked there as the project manager for four years and developed a grassland partnership project with government agencies, ranchers and landowners to protect and manage the prairie and grassland systems of that area.

Kristen transferred to the South Carolina Chapter late March of 2004 to open the Southern Blue Ridge Escarpment Project in Greenville. She now works with partners in the project area to coordinate conservation efforts in land protection, science and land management. Kristen also works with the North Carolina Chapter staff to coordinate cross-boundary objectives in the project area and implements a community outreach program in the Upstate counties.
