Sunset Beach Walk at Goosewing

Tuesday, June 17th at 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.

Discover the Plovers and the living beach during dusk hours and experience the awe of the sunset and moonrise. Register with The Nature Conservancy’s Naturalist, Polly Turner at (401)529-1786. Program is free.

Saturday Beach Walks at Goosewing

Saturday mornings from June 21st to August 9th at 8:30 a.m.

View the endangered Piping Plovers and learn about other creatures that inhabit our barrier beaches.  Register with The Nature Conservancy’s Naturalist, Polly Turner, at (401)529-1786. Program is free. There is a parking fee.

Goosewing Family Day: A “No Child Left Inside” Program

Saturday, June 28th from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Come with your whole family to connect to nature.  Visit a number of “Exploration Stations” along the beach and fill out a nature journal.  Junior Naturalist prizes will be awarded.  Program is free, but please note there is a fee for parking at South Shore Beach.

Volunteer Plover Stewards Wanted!

If you like to walk on the beach and are interested in learning and sharing about the local wildlife, becoming a Plover Steward at Goosewing Beach Preserve may be just what you need for the summer. Call Polly Turner with The Nature Conservancy for more details (401)529-1786.

Polly Turner is the Education Coordinator and Naturalist for The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island’s Sakonnet Landscape. She came to TNC from Teton Science Schools where she taught their Graduate Program that develops leaders in place-based education and field science teaching. Her mission to “Leave No Child Inside” has guided her through almost 15 years of outdoor teaching, including stints at several nature centers throughout the country and as a park ranger for six National Parks. Polly is passionate about the study and observation of nature, especially about our feathered friends. Polly received a Master of Education from Montana State University Billings and a B.A. in biology from Colorado College.

Directions to Goosewing Beach:

From Providence:

  1. Take 195 East to Route 24 South in Fall River.
  2. Follow  ROUTE 24 to Route 77 South in Tiverton.
  3. Go south on Route 77 for 10.5 miles (past Tiverton Four Corners and into Little Compton).
  4. When you see a sign for “The Commons”, take a left onto Meeting House Road.
  5. Stay on Meeting House Road until it ends at Wilbur’s Store.
  6. Turn right at Wilbur’s store onto South Commons Road and follow it to it’s end. 
  7. Take a left and then take the first right.  Follow that road , it will take a sharp left and lead to South Shore Beach. 
  8. Go to the far (east) end of South Shore Beach.  Goosewing is toward the east from the end of South Shore.

From Newport or South County:

  1. Take Route 24 North through Aquidnick Island and go over the bridge to Tiverton.
  2. Just over the bridge take the first exit onto Route 77 South. 
  3. Follow instructions from #3 above.
