The Nature Conservancy Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Tannersville Cranberry Bog Preserve June 23

MONROE COUNTY, PA — June 14, 2007 — Fifty years in the making, the Tannersville Cranberry Bog is one of the best known nature preserves in the Pocono region. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1977 by the U.S. Department of the Interior and is a local treasure for Monroe County elementary students who explore the bog from its floating boardwalk. Visiting the 900-acre Tannersville Cranberry Bog is a right of passage for all fourth graders in the county.

On June 23rd, the community and local organizations will celebrate the preserve’s 50th anniversary with a brief oral history of what it took to work with local landowners, government officials and conservationists to build this preserve into an outdoor classroom for elementary students and world-class
scientists who have studied the bog and its rare inhabitants.
