The Nature Conservancy of Oklahoma was recently the recipient of a donation of bird nesting boxes constructed by state members of the Boy Scouts of America at their annual Eagle District Cub Scout Summer Day Camp. The older Cub Scouts, called Webelos, completed the nesting boxes as part of their conservation program during the early June, 2006 camp. The purpose of the project was to foster personal skills, confidence/pride, teamwork and citizenship as the group of 90 boys was split into teams of 2-3 to build the boxes from materials donated by a Tulsa Home Depot store. |

More than 30 nesting boxes for wrens, owls and Canada geese were completed and provided to TNC for use at it's preserves and to the Oxley Nature Center in Tulsa. The TNC boxes are being placed into service at the J.T. Nickel Family Nature and Wildlife Preserve near Tahlequah, the Pontotoc Ridge Nature Preserve near Ada and the Four Canyon Preserve near Woodward. They will be in place for the 2007 nesting season. | |
TNC would like to express it's appreciation to these conservation-minded young men, as well as the scout leaders and volunteers who facilitated this project, for their contribution toward improvement of wildlife habitat in some of Oklahoma's key, biologically-diverse natural areas. Thanks, guys!
