Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is spearheading the ambitious effort, called a Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy. A variety of wildlife stakeholders including state and federal agencies, farm and ranch groups, conservation and sportsmen’s groups, academic professionals and other Oklahomans interested in wildlife conservation are collaborating to design the comprehensive strategy. In 2004, input was received through several forums from experts  and the public that will allow those needs in the state to be heard.

The result will address the needs of all fish and wildlife by using a habitat approach, rather than a species-by-species management approach. Collecting public input is an important part of the planning process. The actual CWCS is now being developed and when finished, it will serve as a guide to the distribution of federal funding for wildlife conservation in the state. The Nature Conservancy has been a very active participant in the entire process and has provided the results of it's science-driven conservation planning to the ODWC.
