Saturday, November 21: Kitty Todd, Northwest Ohio – in the city of Swanton on Old State Line Road
Brush Pile Collection. Come help us collect and pile brush that has resulted from tree thinning that was done by staff to restore the preserve’s savannas and prairies. The densely growing trees are thinned so that sunlight can reach the ground and allow the sun loving prairie to grow once again. Piling the brush makes it easier for staff to do additional restoration work at these sites. We will meet at the preserve office then walk or carpool to the work site.
This is a moderate to strenuous project.

Saturday, November 21: Herrick Fen, Northeast Ohio – in Portage County near Streetsboro
Buckthorn Control. If you missed the October volunteer day, this is your last chance this year to work in Herrick Fen. We will push the buckthorn front further south as we continue to reclaim areas of the fen from this loathsome invasive. We will cut the buckthorn and treat the stumps with herbicide. Herrick Fen supports one of the few reproducing populations of tamarack in Ohio, as well as an extensive population of bayberry, found in only three Ohio locations. Though buckthorn is not generally found in areas of standing water, at Herrick it is always a good idea to wear old or expendable tennis shoes. Please note that this preserve has poison sumac.
This is a moderate to strenuous project.

Saturday, November 24: Big Darby Headwaters Nature Preserve, Central Ohio – in Logan County about 35 minutes from the Dublin exit on I-270
Honeysuckle Control. Are you looking for a way to do something good for nature? Here is your opportunity This preserve has a lot of bush honeysuckle and we need volunteers to help us control it. Volunteers will cut the honeysuckle with loppers and bow saws and treat the stumps with herbicide. Honeysuckle is an invasive plant that grows quickly and crowds out other plants. Removing it will enable native plants to repopulate the area. These Tuesday projects will be just like typical Saturday projects; we will meet at 10:00 a.m. and wrap up around 2:00 p.m. We will take a break about half way through the project to eat lunch, so please remember to bring your lunch and plenty to drink in a backpack. We encourage all volunteers to work at their own pace and take breaks as often as necessary.
This preserve is on County Road 152 in Middleburg, OH 43336.
This a moderate to strenuos project.

Saturday, December 12: Strait Creek Prairie Bluffs, Southern Ohio – in Pike and Adams Counties
Cedar Clearing. Are you ready for a serious work out? Our cedar clearing volunteer projects are a vital part of our efforts to open up areas that support rare Ohio prairie communities. The preserve consists of large mosaic grasslands and prairies interspersed with second-growth woods. In the past, the area was disturbed and deprived of fire, allowing the invasive cedar trees to move in. On this project day we will be cutting down the cedar trees and piling them. On this project we will meet at 9:45 a.m. and embark on a 15-20 minute hike to the work site. Please bring loppers and bowsaws to this project. As with all projects, we recommend, long pants, a hat and work gloves. We consider this to be a strenuous project and we encourage you to work at your own pace and take breaks as often as necessary. Please bring a lunch and plenty to drink in a backpack. We will take a break about half way through the project and eat lunch at the work site. Also, please note that there are no restrooms or other facilities on this property. Please remember that if you register for this project we are counting on you. If, after registering, you realize that you can’t participate please email Barbara Bhattacharya at bbhattacharya@ tnc.org or call Dave Minney at 740-947-2365. Directions to the meeting location will be emailed to people on the registration list the Thursday before the project.

Trail Maintenance. Don’t miss this opportunity to help preserve a registered National Natural Landmark. The Edge of Appalachia Preserve is one of the most biologically diverse collections of natural systems in the Midwestern U. S., encompassing rugged woodland, prairie openings, waterfalls, giant promontories and clear streams. On this project day we will clear downed trees, install water bars and trim brush from the 2.5 mile Wilderness Preserve Trail. Please bring loppers and hand pruners, all other equipment will be provided by the preserve.

Saturday, December 12: White Pine Bog, Northeast Ohio - Geauga County
Garlic Mustard or Woody Invasive Control. This preserve forms part of Ohio’s finest remaining wetlands and harbors more than a dozen endangered or threatened plant and animal species. Join the team of volunteers in the persistent fight against the invasive plant species that threaten this precious natural area. If the ground is not snow covered and garlic mustard is visible then we will work to eradicate it. If it is snowy, we will work to control the buckthorn and muliflora rose population. Do something good for the environment—sign-up for both White Pine Bog projects this quarter!
This is a moderate to strenuous project.
