Buckthorn Control
Date/Time:
Saturday, March 20th, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
Overview:
This is the only Herrick Fen project day this quarter! You won’t want to miss experiencing this lovely northeast Ohio preserve as winter turns into spring. This preserve provides vital habitat for over two dozen state-listed species, including tamarack. The fen supports one of the few reproducing populations of tamarack in Ohio, the only native conifer in Ohio that sheds its needles each year. We need your help on this project as we work in the Melanthium Fen area to protect the native fen communities by fighting invasive buckthorn. We will use loppers and saws to cut down as much of it as possible. Make sure to wear boots or old tennis shoes, as there may be areas that are muddy and wet, and wear pants and long sleeves, as there is poison sumac at the preserve.
