Buckthorn Control
Date/Time:
Saturday, November 21st, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
Overview:
If you missed the October volunteer day, this is your last chance this year to work in Herrick Fen. We will push the buckthorn front further south as we continue to reclaim areas of the fen from this loathsome invasive. We will cut the buckthorn and treat the stumps with herbicide. Herrick Fen supports one of the few reproducing populations of tamarack in Ohio, as well as an extensive population of bayberry, found in only three Ohio locations. Though buckthorn is not generally found in areas of standing water, at Herrick it is always a good idea to wear old or expendable tennis shoes. Please note that this preserve has poison sumac.
