Now that you've filled out your application and waiver forms, it's time to take a look at what kind of opportunities are available.

July 2008

Ludwigia Pull on the Peconic River
Date/Time: July 12 and 13, 9:00am – 3:00pm
Location: Peconic Lake Estates Civic Organization property in Calverton

Description: The Peconic Estuary Program, in collaboration with Suffolk County, The Nature Conservancy, Fresh Water Anglers of Long Island, Inc., the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership, Long Island Bassmasters, and the Peconic Lake Estates Civic Organization plan to embark on the third season of their Ludwigia eradication program on the Peconic River. Volunteers are needed to be out on boats pulling the plant and onshore transferring the plants from the boats to dumpsters. Keep checking www.peconicestuary.org for more information and details.

What to Bring: Beverages; Waders, if you have them; Metal garden rakes; Life jacket, if you have them; Swimming pool skimming nets, if possible.

LI Maritime Museum’s 17th Annual Seafood Festival
Date/Time: Saturday, August 23, (9:00am – 5:00pm) and Sunday August 24, (10:00am-6:00pm)
Location: Long Island Maritime Museum, West Sayville

Description: Nature Conservancy staff and volunteers will set up and assist with the Conservancy’s table at the LI Seafood Festival. The display will consist of posters and handouts discussing the Conservancy's projects and successes, as well as a touch-tank containing various critters vital to the ecosystem. Shifts will be between 2 and 3 hours long; volunteers will receive a brief training from staff members at the start of their shift so that they are comfortable answering questions and interacting with the public. Volunteers will receive free admission to the festival, which will feature arts and crafts exhibitions, live music, and seafood prepared by the Hewlett Fish Market. It’s sure to be a great event! More information about the festival can be found at www.limaritime.org. Volunteers must register with The Nature Conservancy in advance.

Summer 2008 (various dates TBD from June through September)

Surface Elevation Table (SET) installation
Date/Time: To Be Determined
Location: Various sites around Long Island, primarily on the eastern end of Long Island (East Hampton, Southampton, Southold, and possibly in Shirley)

Description: Work with Nature Conservancy staff and other volunteers to help establish Surface Elevation Table benchmarks (SETs) in salt marshes around Long Island. We will be measuring how well these marshes are keeping up with sea level rise.  Volunteers will work in teams with trained staff to make benchmark installations using stainless steel rods and cement.  Please wear work clothes, mud boots or close-toed shoes, a hat, and thin gloves.  Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks or lunch. This is a strenuous project.
