Friday, June 9, 2006; 5pm Jesse H. Ausubel – Counting all the Fish in the Sea
From microbes to mammals, Arctic to Antarctic, abyss to surface, and near shore to mid-ocean, scientists from 70 countries are producing the First Census of Marine Life. The project, to be completed in 2010, will assess and explain the diversity, distribution and abundance of marine life in our seas. Ausubel, who helped initiate the Census, will report its progress.

Friday, July 14, 2006;  5pm Rick Cech – Butterflies, Caterpillars and Plants
Butterflies and plants live in intimate harmony. Why do butterflies select only particular host plants? How does a butterfly's choice of plants influence nearly every aspect of its lifestyle? How do host plants fight back against browsing caterpillars?

Thursday, August 3, 2006; 5pm Darrell Morrison – Landscaping with Native Plants
There is often a perceived conflict between ecologically-based landscape design and aesthetically-rich design. Morrison will dispel that idea, showing both naturally-evolving landscapes and designed-and-managed landscapes that are both ecologically-sound and experientially rich examples from his own work.

Saturday, August 19, 2006; 5pm Scott Weidensaul – Return to Wild America: A Yearlong Search for the Continent's Natural Soul. Co-sponsored with Concerned Citizens of Montauk.
From the seabird cliffs of Newfoundland to the cypress swamps of Florida, from the cloud forests of the Sierra Madre in Mexico to lonely islands far out in the Bering Sea, Weidensaul will discuss his search for the wild heart of the continent and the inspiration for his latest book.
