Time and time again, the beaches of Long Island are voted among the best in the country. Our pine barren forests protect our largest and most pure drinking water aquifer. Acres of precious wetlands protect our homes and parks from storms and erosion.
Long Island, everyone agrees, is a special place.
Since the early 1950s, The Nature Conservancy has preserved over 100,000 acres of pine barrens forests, coastal dunes, ocean beaches, and wetlands. Today, we work with an array of partners to balance growth with protection of our beautiful and wild places—places that improve our quality of life by providing us with clean water and air, open space, recreation opportunities, and sanctuary.
Most preserves are open from dawn to dusk year-round for walking, bird watching, cross country skiing and other passive recreational use.
These places have something special to offer at every time of the year: abundant wildflowers in the spring, butterflies in the summer, migrating birds and changing colors in autumn, and peaceful snow-covered trails peppered with animal tracks in the winter.
