Eastern: Marian Yarrow Sanctuary

Why You Should Visit
Travel through the hardwood forests of Marian Yarrow to discover its wetlands, and continue on to Hidden Lake to watch for migratory birds. Just east of the lake, you will find a small stream cascading down a 30-foot waterfall before flowing into Indian Brook. The remainder of the preserve combines rugged and gentle terrain with maturing deciduous forest and a small meadow.

Directions

I-684 to exit 6; east on Rt. 35 to North Salem Road.
Turn left on North Salem Road and follow for 0.25 miles to Mt. Holly Road.
Turn right (east) onto Mount Holly Road for 1.5 miles to a sharp left.
Make the left turn & continue on Mt. Holly Road 0.3 mile past intersection with Holly Hill Lane.
Preserve is on the right.

What to See: Plants
This preserve is made up mainly of upland mixed hardwood forest dominated by black birch. You will also notice lots of white ash, white and red oak, and large-tooth aspen.

What to See: Animals
Watch for birds at Hidden Lake and smaller wetlands around the preserve including pileated woodpeckers, wood ducks, palm warblers, hermit thrushes, ovenbirds and indigo buntings. Also watch for red spotted newts, spotted salamanders, box and painted turtles, star-nosed moles and mink.

Why the Conservancy Selected This Site In 1975, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson P. Foss donated 47 acres in memory of Mr. Foss's mother, and Henry and Nannette Orr donated the remaining 31 acres to The Nature Conservancy in 2001.
