Go DeeperThe Nature Conservancy on Long Island
|
In early 2006, The Nature Conservancy on Long Island launched its most ambitious and comprehensive conservation initiative to date. Backed by more than 100 citizens, farmers, business leaders, and environmentalists, Long Island’s Last Stand is a 10-year action plan to preserve 25,000 acres of habitat and open space and 10,000 acres of farmland in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
The initiative has made significant headway toward meeting its goals, with hundreds of millions of dollars already earmarked for land preservation and habitat restoration across Long Island.
Long Island’s Last Stand is funding land acquisitions in important areas such as the Pine Barrens and coastal wetlands. It is making possible the restoration of degraded marshes and the expansion of innovative shellfish restoration efforts across our bays and harbors.
Long Island’s Last Stand is proving to be an investment that will preserve the best of Long Island for our children, grandchildren, and future generations.
