The Nature Conservancy of New York

International Focus

The Atlantic Forest
Five hundred years ago, the Atlantic Forest of Brazil covered approximately 330 million acres (about twice the size of Texas), but today more than 92% of this forest has been cleared and what remains is highly fragmented. Despite its diminished state, the Atlantic Forest still ranks as a global conservation priority.

Due to the fragmented state of the Atlantic Forest, effective conservation is highly dependent on large-scale landscape planning in order to reconnect these isolated remnants. The Conservancy’s goal is to create core reserves of primary or secondary forest surrounded by working forest buffer zones. The aim is to ultimately re-connect these areas through reforestation initiatives that also promote sustainable income for local communities.
