All Hands on Deck to Battle Aliens
• Invasive species are spreading - from New York City to the Adirondacks, these invaders are costing New Yorkers hundreds of millions of dollars and harming some of the state's most printine natural areas. Read about The Nature Conservancy's Invasive Species Initiative.
• The threats we face are chilling. Swede midge, which arrived from Canada last year, can destroy our broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage crops if it becomes established. Southern bacterial wilt, from Africa and South America, could contaminate our soils and drastically reduce the yields of potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers. Escaped bighead and silver carp from the Chicago River could seriously disrupt the ecology of New York's waterways if they enter the Great Lakes.
