  • Together, the Audubon Society and Birdlife International are working on the Important Bird Area Program, an effort to identify those places that are critical to birds during some part of their life cycle (breeding, wintering, feeding, migrating).

  • New York State has 136 Important Bird Areas composed of many different types of habitats, including forests, shrub/scrub, grasslands, freshwater and saltwater wetlands, and bodies of water.

  • The Nature Conservancy has its own Migratory Bird Program dedicated to protecting critical habitats for birds of conservation concern throughout the Western Hemisphere.

  • The Gulf Wings Project is developing a plan to identify and protect the most important stopover habitats for the more than 260 migratory species that make the annual journey across or around the Gulf of Mexico.
