This month’s guest lecturer is Susan Walker of Cornell University. She is studying deer movement patterns in relation to the availability of corn at the “four poster” stations. Learn about why some deer have those big tags in their ears and what they are finding out about where deer live and move.

There is an incredible array of marine organisms that hide beneath your feet in the mud. Come for an eye-opening look at the worms, shrimp and different kinds of clams which can be found at low tide. Bring a clam rake if you have it, although we’ll be returning everything back to the wild.

Early spring is the perfect time to attack invasives such as Japanese barberry and garlic mustard. These non-native species green up earlier than the native plants, making them easy to ID and remove.

Come see Montauk in spring bloom! We’ll visit the 99-acre Shadmoor State Park to see the spectacular ocean front sand and clay bluffs while hiking through the flowering shadbush. We’ll walk Shadmoor’s Roosevelt Run trail, see the WWII observation bunkers and take a side trip down to the beach at Ditch Plains.

Our annual early morning birdwatch and breakfast is an eye and ear-opener. We will break into teams, each led by an expert birder, to explore various habitats surrounding the Manor House. Each team will try to identify as many species as possible by both sight and song, with a complete list being compiled at the end of the morning.
