Nature Conservancy Announces Conservation Staff for Southwestern New Mexico

SANTA FE, NM — The Nature Conservancy announces the appointment of Martha Schumann as its new Southwest New Mexico Field Representative in Silver City, NM.

Schumann will be responsible for the Conservancy’s conservation activities in the southwestern portion of the state.  She will work with community businesses, landowners, government agencies and with other non-profit conservation organizations to protect the land, water and wildlife of the area.  Schumann will also manage the Conservancy’s Gila Riparian and Mimbres River Preserves.

For the past year, Schumann served as Outreach and Education Coordinator for the Rio Puerco Management Committee in Cuba, NM.  Previously, she served as the Community Forestry Research Center Coordinator, Land Trust Coordinator, and Youth Conservation Corps Coordinator at the Forest Guild in Santa Fe, NM.  While at the Forest Guild, she designed, managed and implemented projects to protect forested land and support community forestry.  She also monitored conservation easements and raised funds for Forest Guild programs.

“Martha brings extensive forest and watershed conservation experience to our Silver City-based program,” said Terry Sullivan, state director for the Conservancy’s New Mexico program.  “We are delighted to have her on our conservation team.”

Schumann has also served as a research and teaching assistant at the University of Arizona, University of Maine, and at The Harvard Forest.  She received a Master of Science in Forestry at the University of Maine in Orono, ME and a B.A. from Amherst College in Amherst, MA.
