When the action of one can influence the action of many others, you’ve got a good piece of leverage. That’s what’s happening with a challenge grant offered by the Samuel P. Hunt Foundation for TNC’s conservation work in the Ossipee Pine Barrens.

The Hunt Foundation offered a $50,000 grant, on the condition that the Conservancy raise an additional $25,000 for the purchase of key tracts in the Ossipee Pine Barrens, and raise another $25,000 for long-term stewardship of those tracts.

The Conservancy has already matched the $25,000 for land acquisition. Now comes the rest of the challenge: raising $25,000 for stewardship of these remarkable lands.

“Protecting land is only the first part of conservation,” said Tiffany McKenna, director of philanthropy for the Conservancy in New Hampshire. “In the pine barrens, especially, the challenge is to restore and take care of these remarkable ecosystems. The Hunt Foundation understands how important this is and they encourage others to rise to the challenge.”
