Traditional Uses of Native Plants

August 2-8, 2009

Overview:

For at least 10,000 years, humans have lived and thrived along the “Front” and relied heavily on plant for their food, medicine and material culture.  During this workshop, participants will explore the prairies, forests and other rich habitats of the Rocky Mountain Front from the perspective of early peoples. On daily plant walks, we’ll learn to identify & gather small quantities of seasonal foods—and learn the ethics of proper gathering. We’ll try our hands at crafting projects such as gathering baskets, folk toys and other useful implements throughout the week.  Woven throughout our activities will be discussions of the history of local Native Americans and the manner in which they use and relate to plants culturally.

Instructor:

The workshop will be instructed by Pine Butte Guest Ranch Naturalist and Wilderness Skills Instructor David Cronenwett. David is a wonderfully, engaging guide and keen observor of the natural world.  His knowledge of plants and wildlife of the Front makes any hike a true adventure.

Enrollment and Cost:

This workshop is limited to 16 participants. Cost is $1700.00 per person. Price includes lodging, meals, airport shuttle, and all activities. Please contact Pine Butte Guest Ranch for more information.
