Montana Wildflowers

May 22-28, 2009Nature Conservancy Montana Pine Butte Guest Ranch wildflowers natural history workshops education

Overview:

This workshop will be a real treat for wildflower enthusiasts.  This is a great time of year not only for wildflowers but also for observing birds and wildlife in general. During May, our prairies and foothills are vivid green, often covered with an astounding display of wild blooms. Daily field trips will take us into to an amazing variety of habitat types, each supporting a magnificent diversity of plants. During the day, we’ll explore the wild and pristine lands of Montana by van and on foot.   In the evenings, audio-visual presentations will enhance our experiences in the field. We’ll visit Pine Butte Swamp Preserve, the Nature Conservancy's sprawling 18,000-acre sanctuary that lies at the foot of the Rockies. Day hikes will take us into the forested Rocky Mountains, the Teton River bottomlands, and into Montana's vast prairies.  In order to maintain a high quality experience for all, enrollment will be limited to 16 people.

We will do much more than merely identify wildflowers. We’ll explore plant ecology, insect pollination, uses of native plants by wildlife and humans, and of course, there’ll be plenty of guidance and opportunities for wildflower photography.
