Many of our guests enjoy spending time at Glacier National Park, which is about a two-hour drive from the Guest Ranch, depending on your route. We often provide day trips from the Guest Ranch. Sometimes, guests prefer to drive themselves. Here are some tips for enjoying your time at the Park.
On the East Side of the Park
-
Many Glacier is a good area for wildlife viewing. The day hiking in this area is spectacular. Details of day hikes are available at the Many Glacier Lodge.

Traveling up the east side of Going-to-the-Sun Highway:
- Just past St. Mary Lake look for sign and turn out for Sunrift Gorge. Park and take the short (75 yd) walk on the north side of the road. Be sure to walk to the very end of the trail for an interesting view.
- A bit further up the road there will be another sign and turnout for St. Mary Falls. It is a beautiful and short hike (.8 miles) to the falls; lf you want to continue, it is another half mile to Virginia Falls.
- At Logan Pass, parking is usually hard to find. The area is beautiful and worth walking in but there will be lots of people.
-
Two Medicine Lake area:
- Beautiful boat ride across lake to access hiking trails to Twin Falls and Upper Two Medicine. Easy approximately 5-mile round trip hike.
- On the road below Two Medicine is a stop for Trick Falls. It is a short 1/4 mile hike and a great swimming hole.
-
Places to eat
- East Glacier area - Sorrano's for great Mexican food. Or try the Thimbleberry Cafe-good food (try the Indian fry bread)
- St. Mary area - Park Cafe-wonderful pies, Three Sisters Cafe-good food
On the West Side
-
Avalanche Creek is a must stop. There is a wonderful short flat walk of 3/4 mile called Trail of the Cedars. For a longer hike, continue about 3 miles up to Avalanche Lake.
-
Where to eat in West Glacier: Your best option is Belton Chalet. It is a bit upscale for Montana and expensive, but generally good.
