You Can Make a Difference in the Future of South Mississippi...

If damage to wetlands is inevitable and you must compensate through wetland mitigation credits, why not invest where you can make a difference in the ecology of South Mississippi? The Nature Conservancy's mitigation bank may be an option that eases the permitting process and allows development to have minimal impact on the environment.

A Wise Choice Since 1996...

In November of 1996, the Mississippi Chapter of The Nature Conservancy acquired over 1,700 acres in Jackson County to establish the Old Fort Bayou Mitigation Bank. Situated only a few miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, this unique area was Mississippi's first coastal wetland mitigation bank. Today, credits are available that allow customers to meet mitigation requirements while helping The Nature Conservancy maintain the wetland aquatic resources of South Mississippi.

The Nature Conservancy's Mitigation Bank, A Permanent Commitment to Your Long-Term Protection...

The Nature Conservancy's restoration and management strategies include:

  • removal of non-native, invasive species
  • application of non-native, invasive species
  • creation of erosion control features
  • filling man-made ditches

Our efforts also include monitoring restoration progress and acquiring other important habitats.

The Nature Conservancy is committed to creating the greatest positive impact at each location we acquire. For example, Old Fort Bayou Mitigation Bank's location allows us to work closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Cooperative efforts significantly increase the benefits offered by The Nature Conservancy. Through continued cooperation of businesses and individuals, we are making a positive impact on the health of our coastal ecology.
