In early February 2008, the Conservancy’s Mississippi and Louisiana chapters orchestrated the planting of approximately 1,050 acres of bottomland hardwood seedlings at three sites in Louisiana and Mississippi. St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge, O’Keefe Wildlife Management Area and Ouachita Wildlife Management Area were planted using funds secured by the Conservancy through the North American Wetlands Conservation Act. Various seedling species were selected in order to provide diverse bottomland hardwood forests that will be used by many wildlife species, including overwintering waterfowl and the federally endangered Louisiana black bear.
