Mississippi Delta
For many years the Conservancy has been working with partners to protect the Mississippi Delta, historically one of the most biologically diverse areas in the state. The Conservancy has protected wildlife habitat in the Delta by acquiring lands for inclusion in various National Wildlife Refuges (NWR). Examples of these refuges include Morgan Brake NWR, Hillside NWR, Dahomey NWR and Panther Swamp NWR. The Conservancy has also worked with the Delta National Forest to acquire critical inholdings and assist with management plans. In order to better pursue conservation goals in this region, the Conservancy will establish an office in the Mississippi Delta within the coming year. Having locally based staff in the Delta will allow the Conservancy to take its conservation goals to the next level. The initial focus will be within the Yazoo River and Big Sunflower River watersheds. However, a more detailed Conservation Area Plan will better guide our conservation actions within the entire Delta region. In the meantime, the Conservancy will continue to work with partners to increase conservation efforts and work with existing programs, like the Lower Delta Partnership and recovery efforts for the black bear.
Partners or members wishing to make suggestions about this new program are encouraged to contact the Mississippi Field Office at (601) 713-3355. The Nature Conservancy |
