Today, more and more corporate leaders are taking an important part in conserving the biodiversity in our state. The Nature Conservancy has achieved a good reputation working with agencies, businesses and foundations to create a balance between sustaining Mississippi’s growth and protecting the state’s precious natural areas. By partnering with the Conservancy in Mississippi, businesses are responding to the challenge of growing the state’s economy while keeping in mind quality of life for members of our communities and reducing environmental impacts.

This year, over 30 major businesses, corporations and foundations have joined or renewed their membership in the Corporate Council for the Environment to help our chapter strengthen its efforts preserving and protecting special habitats throughout the state. Funding and in kind contributions from corporate leaders in this prestigious group have enabled our team of conservationists and scientists to take the following actions:

  • Restore and reforest longleaf pine habitat in Mississippi.
  • Remove exotic and invasive plants which affect native food sources for threatened species like the gopher tortoise.
  • Conduct prescribed fire to restore landscapes to their natural state and reduce threat of wildfires.
  • Partner with agencies to restore oyster reefs.
  • Conduct environmental education opportunities for elementary school students.
  • Organize employee volunteer work days at nearby preserves and natural areas.

The Conservancy continues to plan innovative ways to carry out more of our important work on land, in freshwater and the Gulf of Mexico.  Membership support from the Corporate Council for the Environment  turns these plans into reality.  We invite you to join this distinguished group.
