The Nature Conservancy has partnered with Camp Ripley in central Minnesota since 2001 on land management as well as prescribed fires. Camp Ripley is owned and managed by the Minnesota Department of Military Affairs. It is the main training site for the Minnesota National Guard and the National Guard's primary winter training facility in the United States.
Conservancy staff designs and assists with the implementation of environmental burns outside the boundaries of the traditional impact areas, which are burned annually to reduce the hazard of live rounds igniting prairie grasses. The environmental burns are designed to maximize fuel reduction and manage ecological habitat, and will additionally enable these lands to be utilized for troop maneuvers and training.
