Nassawango Creek Preserve Stewardship
Committee Seeks New Members
Currently under the loving care of chair Joe Fehrer, Jr., the son of "Nassawango Joe" himself, the Committee has been a force of nature for some thirty years. The preserve keeps growing and growing—the most recent acquisition has more than doubled the number of protected acres—so more eyes, ears and hands are needed to patrol boundary lines, maintain trails, and enjoy fun and fellowship at quarterly meetings and annual events like the chili dinner and canoe trip. Residents of Worcester, Wicomico, and Somerset Counties only, please! For more information, please contact Joe Fehrer, Nassawango Land Manager, at (410) 632-4761 or jfehrer@tnc.org.
Serpentine Grassland Restoration
Volunteers—individuals and groups—needed at Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area in Baltimore County to restore Maryland's largest serpentine barren. This unique prairie-like environment is marked by oak savannah and a host of rare species. Over the years, invasive pines have displaced the native vegetation. We need to remove pines, perform prescribed burns, and monitor the rare species. As a volunteer, you can make a difference while gaining hands-on experience in ecosystem restoration. For more information, contact Paula Becker at (410) 260-8568 or PBECKER@dnr.state.md.us, or e-mail Jim Dudley at serpsd@yahoo.com. No experience necessary; training will be provided.
How about indoor projects?
Biological Information Management
The Maryland Natural Heritage Program seeks volunteers for a variety of information management tasks in its Annapolis Office. Projects involve working with maps, GIS software, plant specimens, and database work pertaining to information used in the Biological Conservation Database. Opportunities also exist to help with some field work. Full training is provided and hours are flexible. For more information, contact Paula Becker at (410) 260-8568 or PBECKER@dnr.state.md.us.
