Offutt Island

This is a small island in the Potomac River that is only accessible by boat about 10 miles from Washington, DC. A monitor should be comfortable and experienced with boating in the Potomac; this section is flatwater but conditions on the river can be variable. The island has two old buildings on it that we need to stabilize and protect from becoming hazardous or attractive nuisances. A combination of volunteers with boating skills, carpentry skills, or a mix of both can help monitor the preserve. Someone with carpentry skills but no boating skills could be paired with a canoeist to go out together, for example.

Monitoring is best done when river levels are not at flood stages, for safest access to the river. Spring and fall are the seasons most subject to flooding. Launching is off MacArthur Boulevard below Great Falls, and the trip takes 5-15 minutes. We can loan a canoe for each trip and paddles, but volunteers would need their own PFD's. We also can provide most tools, and all supplies for carpentry repairs.
