Details on The Glades

This is a medium-size preserve, so we are looking for 2 Boundary Walkers. Only a tiny part of the boundary line is on the road; most is in the wetland (some of it very open and sunny) or through the woods.  These lines have a fairly remote feel although there many neighbors. The elevation of the lines is between 2660 and 2700 feet and most are flat and wet.  Because there are quite a few adjacent house lots, volunteers may encounter these neighbors from time to time.  We have good relations with these neighbors in general and reserve hunting privileges at the preserve for neighbors only. With adjacent houses there is always the chance that someone will build or push yard waste across our line, so that's something we'll want to hear about from our Boundary Walkers.

Most of the lines are in good shape as of November 2006 because we have had our local crew relocating and remarking them after many years of neglect.  We hope our new volunteers can get out on the ground soon while the lines are still clear and visible and keep them in good shape in the coming years.

Because it is hunted during legal deer season only, that season is a good time to avoid the preserve.  Boundary work is easiest anytime the leaves are off the trees, but because this preserve is at elevation in Garrett County, autumn comes earlier and spring comes later than in other parts of Maryland, giving us a longer season to work.
