Details on Hammel GladeThis is a medium-size preserve, so we are looking for 2 Boundary Walkers. Part of the boundary line is easy to reach, as it's on a roadside, but most parts are in the woods or in the wetland. The elevation of the lines is between 2500 and 2680 feet and most are flat and wet. A small portion of the line climbs a bit quickly, so there will be some walking on hills. There are several adjacent house lots so volunteers may encounter these neighbors from time to time. We have not spent a lot of time on this preserve, so we don't have much to say about our relations with the neighbors. With adjacent houses there is always the chance that someone will build or push yard waste across our line, so that's something we'll want to hear about from our Boundary Walkers. Most of the lines are in good shape as of November 2006 because we have had our local crew relocating and remarking them after many years of neglect. We hope our new volunteers can get out on the ground soon while the lines are still clear and visible and keep them in good shape in the coming years. Because it is narrow and adjacent to houses, this preserve is not hunted so boundary work is easiest anytime the leaves are off the trees. Because it is near a roadside, this preserve has a history of dumping, both household trash and sometimes deer carcasses. While these are unsightly and upsetting, they seldom cause ecological damage so we're not often able to respond very quickly. |
