TNC Next 2nd Annual Member Appreciation Event
TNC Next members again met at Frontier Cafe, Cinema and Gallery in Brunswick for an evening of great conversation, good food (including an incredible Ghanian Nut Soup!), and cold drinks with like-minded people. Following the cocktail hour, Kate Dempsey, Senior Policy Advisor for The Nature Conservancy in Maine, and David Banks, Director of the Conservancy's Africa Program, delivered presentations on climate policy action and our work in Africa, respectively. See photos from the event here.
TNC Next Sunset Paddle on Casco Bay
TNC Next members paddled on Casco Bay on the picturesque evening of July 9th. Members glided between lobster boats, viewed various birds as well as a bald eagle in his nest and several harbor seals resting on the rocks. They were guided by L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery School staff and learned about the marine and wildlife and in and around the bay. Once upon shore, everyone enjoyed socializing and a wonderful meal of lobster and beverages. The Nature Conservancy thanks Maine Island Trail Association and the L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery School for partnering with us to provide this wonderful experience.
See our Flickr page for pictures of the evening.
TNC Next 2nd Annual Gala
On April 30th over 110 people joined TNC Next at Custom House Wharf for our 2nd annual gala to celebrate a year of hope and conservation success, highlighting our marine conservation work in the Gulf of Maine. The Nature Conservancy partnered with Catch a Piece of Maine (CAPOM) and L.L. Bean to learn more about the Gulf's habitats and identify best practices to help it rebound. The group heard from Mike Tetreault, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy in Maine as well as guest speakers Captain John Ready and Captain Curt Brown of CAPOM. A fun filled, informative evening was had by all.

TNC Next Meets CCCM: Brown Bag Lecture featuring Aurelio Ramos
Members of TNC Next the Corporate Conservation Council of Maine (CCCM) joined The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in Portland to hear Aurelio Ramos, TNC’s Northern Tropical Andes Conservation Program Director, and Rebecca Goldman, TNC's Senior Scientist for Board Relations to learn about innovative deals to save the unique forests, expansive river systems and abundant grasslands of the Tropical Andes.
Maine Huts and Trails Partner Event
Two groups of TNC Next members snowshoed or skied in to Maine Huts and Trails’ Flagstaff and Poplar Stream huts in Northern Maine for an overnight adventure of home-cooked meals and good company. We were lucky to have such an extraordinarily beautiful weekend for this first-hand experience of conservation in Maine. Read the article by TNC Next member, Deirdre Fulton, and check out photos here.
TNC Next Member Reception
On October 22, 2008, 45 TNC Next members met at Frontier Cafe, Cinema and Gallery in Brunswick for the first exclusive member event. This celebration of the first year of TNC Next boasted a cocktail hour accompanied by the photography exhibits, Irreplaceable Wildlife in a Warming World and Stranded: The Sea Turtles of Baja California Sur, Mexico. We were extremely lucky to have TNC Next member Brian Wedge speak to us about his experiences documenting the critically endangered caguamas (Loggerhead sea turtles) and their relationship with an impoverished fishing village on the Baja Peninsula.
Boat Tour of the Kennebec River
Despite the rainy weather, over 40 young professionals joined us on July 31, 2008 for an exploration of the area of The Nature Conservancy's Kennebec Estuary Project. We are thankful that the rain held off and that the fog was light enough to allow for some spectacular views of the bald eagles, sturgeons, harbor seals, islands, forests, sea, rivers and farmlands that make up this unique tidal estuary of mid-coast Maine. Click to see photos from the boat tour.
TNC Next Kick-Off Event
TNC Next celebrated an overwhelmingly successful kick-off event on April 9, 2008 at the new Ocean Gateway Terminal in Portland. More than 275 people showed up to show their support and learn more about TNC Next. The event attracted the local media including MPBN (Maine NPR). Hear the story by Susan Sharon of MPBN here and check out photos of the kick-off event.
