About the Kennebec Estuary
The Kennebec Estuary is the largest tidal estuary on the East Coast north of the Chesapeake Bay. It is comprised of Merrymeeting Bay and the Lower Kennebec River. Containing over 20% of Maine’s tidal marshes, this system provides critical habitat for several endangered and threatened species and supports extensive working farms and their communities. Mounting development pressures pose the most immediate threat to this estuary and the surrounding countryside. The Nature Conservancy, with a strong network of conservation partners, is working to protect the lands and waters that make up this area in mid-coast Maine. To date, The Nature Conservancy and its partners in the Maine Wetlands Protection Coalition have added nearly 5,000 acres to the 10,800 acres of conservation land throughout the region.
