Volunteer Opportunities The Nature Conservancy in Iowa uses volunteers for many activities from assisting in the office to stewardship and prescribed burns. Volunteer workdays will be posted on this site as they are scheduled. Currently, the Conservancy in Iowa does not have a staff person dedicated to running the volunteer program at this time, therefore other volunteer requests will be posted on this site on an as-needed basis.
A Prairie Rescue Event for Earth DayDate: Saturday. April 26, 2008 Location: Pohl Memorial State Preserve, Ames High Prairie, Central Iowa, Story County Site Information: The 27-acre state preserve, Ames High Prairie is owned by the Ames Unified School District and managed by The Nature Conservancy through a 49-year lease. Ames High Prairie is one of the only areas in the state where tall grass prairie remnants are found in the middle of a city. This makes Ames High Prairie/ Pohl Memorial preserve an ideal outdoor laboratory for students and community residents. Ames High Prairie includes several tall grass prairie openings on relatively dry ridges and slopes, separated by early successional woodland. Despite the small sizes, the prairie openings are high quality and feature more than 100 plant species. Ames High Prairie has benefited from a dedicated group of community volunteers and activists. Ames’ citizens helped in acquiring state preserve protection for the site and have worked endless hours in the prairie. Volunteer Information: Tasks for the day will include: sawing or clearing invasive honeysuckle and treating stumps with a non-restricted use herbicide, and spreading prairie seed in restoration areas. As always, the wind and flooding creek will have deposited garbage in the floodplain and preserve perimeter. Volunteers are needed to help tidy up the preserve. Directions: Ames High Prairie is located behind the Ames High School on the west side of the building. From Grand Avenue in Ames, turn west onto 20th Street. Just before 20th street ends, turn left into the high school parking lot, follow the lot around to the back of the school. Volunteers should meet at the entrance of the preserve by the sign. Directions can also be found on our website nature.org/iowa Contact: Laura Norian or Taryn Samuels, (515) 244-5044, iowa@tnc.org. |
