Turkey Run State Park, Parke County

Wild Plant Hike and Eradication Work Day at Turkey Run!
Join the Friends of Turkey Run and Shades for a hike through one of the park’s many beautiful canyons and upland woods. We will be paying particular attention to our wild and beautiful plants – walking ferns, orchids, trees and every thing we have time for.
This will be followed by a bring-your-own trail lunch at Sunset Point. Then it’s off to work: eradicating invasive bush honeysuckle: the plant that is slowly and seriously blemishing the park’s original wild beauty.
The hike will last about 2 hours and the work session about 2 hours too or whenever we’ve had enough. Meet in front of the Inn at Turkey Run State Park at 10 a.m.
You may attend the Wild Plant Hike alone if that’s all the time you have. But in lieu of work you can still help by contributing - whatever amount you wish – to help us pay for more supplies to continue our eradication efforts. Rich Scott will lead the hike. Rich has conducted wildflower and tree identification workshops here for several years.
No reservations are required but if you think you’re going to make it, let Rich know – redbud@bloomingdaletel.com - so we have enough tools on hand. We will be working with herbicides but we’ll be given some safety tips before we begin out work session.
Please wear long pants and long sleeve shirts since we may be among the briars. Bring work gloves. Protective glasses will be provided. Bring a sack lunch and water. Hope to see you there!
Saturday, May 24
Kankakee Sands Project, Newton County
9 a.m to Noon (Central time)
It’s moving day! We’ll be moving all of those seedlings we’ve transplanted in our greenhouse to their new prairie home. This is our second year of plugging in some of the rarer plants directly into our prairie plantings.
These plant “pods” are species that we haven’t seen in our plantings, at least not in the numbers we’d like to see. Please come and help us get these guys out there! Bring gardening gloves, some water, and a snack or bag lunch.
Meet at the Kankakee Sands Office at 3294 N U.S. Highway 41 (just north of Morocco).
RSVPs greatly appreciated. Contact Andrea Locke at alocke@tnc.org or (219) 285-2184.
