Anniversary Kickoff Event at Kankakee Sands

On Saturday, May 30 members, staff and friends spent the day at The Nature Conservancy's Kankakee Sands Restoration to begin the Indiana Chapter's 50th anniversary celebration.

Those who joined us at our kickoff event were treated to an early morning bird hike throughout the grounds. Grasshopper sparrows, dickcissels and the rare Henslow's sparrow we're spotted flittering in the early prairie morning.

After a short drive to the nursery, staff Alyssa Nyberg discussed how a large percentage of the seeds gathered and planted at the Sands we're found right on the restoration. Guests were then invited to help plant violets (that would encourage Regal Fritillary to visit the site) or to stroll around the grounds. Extra plantings were also offered to those wanting to take a little bit of Kankakee Sands back home.

The picnic on the prairie was enjoyed by all. Guests learned more about what The Nature Conservancy is working on in Indiana from state director, Mary McConnell. Project director Chip O'Leary also spoke about how the cows, who joined the groups at lunch, were helping restoration efforts.

After the picnic, several members and friends stayed to gather seeds for next year's plantings with staff member Stephanie Frischie.
