The Indiana Chapter wouldn't be as successful as we are without the help from our partners. We are proud, and fortunate, to be working with like-minded individuals and organizations around the state.
John Friedrich
Indiana Department of Natural Resources
"For many years my impression of the Nature Conservancy had been that of an organization looking to create preserves to protect rare habitats, species and communities. Through better understanding on my part or growth of the mission at the Conservancy, I see its work more as creating a framework of natural systems that will continue to function in spite of the many landscape changes of humans. The Nature Conservancy seems to have a true grasp that landscape systems can continue to have human intervention as long as basic functions are maintained. And it recognizes that the human communities that operate around these systems can and should have a financial stake in the systems, therefore ensuring maintenance of the systems has value to the communities."
John A. Bacone Division of Nature Preserves Indiana Department of Natural Resources
"The Indiana Chapter of The Nature Conservancy has been an invaluable partner of the Division of Nature Preserves for 40 years. Together, we have partnered in protecting many of Indiana's most significant natural areas. The Nature Conservancy has been a critical part of conservation in Indiana, from the protection of Pine Hills, Indiana's first nature preserve, to present day, large scale conservation projects at places such as Big Walnut. We are grateful for The Nature Conservancy's huge efforts over the past 50 years, in preserving Indiana's Natural Heritage for the benefit of future generations."
Michael Homoya, Botanist/Plant Ecologist
Indiana Natural Heritage Program,
IDNR Division of Nature Preserves
"The Nature Conservancy created the framework for Natural Heritage Programs across the country, and world, to provide “the science behind the acquisition”. In 1978, Indiana’s Natural Heritage Program started in the Indiana Department of Natural Resources with a goal of documenting significant natural areas and rare species sites for the IDNR’s Division of Nature Preserves and the Conservancy. Several important properties have become state dedicated nature preserves as a result of the effort. We and future generations can now and forever walk amongst lofty bald cypress trees, be amazed by bog orchids, admire the panoply of colorful wildflowers in a tallgrass prairie, look for salamanders in rocky streambeds, or just get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Thank you, TNC, for helping to make this all possible."
Ginger A. Murphy, CIT, CIP, CIG Assistant Director for Stewardship Division of State Parks and Reservoirs
"The Indiana Chapter of The Nature Conservancy has worked closely with Indiana State Parks and Reservoirs to acquire significant pieces of land, manage sites through prescribed fire, and interpret unique regions of Indiana through wayside signage. Conservancy staff members clearly believe in the work they do, and we are honored to partner with them to protect important places in the Hoosier state where rare plants can grow, wildlife can flourish and people can discover connections with the natural world. Happy birthday, TNC, and we'll look forward to another 50 years of working together!"
