Jason's Journal:Emiquon Has Gone to the BirdsBy Jason Beverlin November 2007 — When water returned to the historic bed of Lake Thompson earlier this year, it signaled the beginning of renewal. The waterfowl agreed, returning to Emiquon by the thousands. Coots, northern harriers and long-billed dowitchers have spent the fall swimming in the waters. Even with only 600 acres of water on the lake, we saw 30,000 coots and 24,000 ducks. We also saw 20 Pied-billed Grebe nests last spring and, more recently, 62 black-crowned night herons. Entries: |
