The Great Rivers Partnership

Key Project Areas

The Conservancy ranks conservation of great rivers among its global priorities.  The Great Rivers Partnership initially will support conservation of large river systems on three continents:

Upper Mississippi River

The United States: The Mississippi River

Building on nearly 50 years of conservation experience here, the Conservancy is working in close partnership with other organizations to conserve and restore one of the world’s greatest rivers, the Mississippi River and its major tributaries. Conservation efforts will include improving water quality, restoring healthy river flows, and reclaiming floodplains as natural habitat.

Brazil: The Paraguay-Parana River System

The Conservancy will build upon a decade of project work in the Upper Paraguay-Parana River basin, which includes the extensive Pantanal wetlands, to develop an integrated strategy to preserve the basin’s ecological integrity. The Upper Paraguay-Parana River system supports an extensive human population within the basin. Conservation strategies here employ public-private partnerships for restoring watersheds, influencing sustainable agricultural development and improving water management.

China: The Yangtze River

The Conservancy will work with the government of China to create the Conservation Blueprint for China, a national assessment of conservation priorities for the entire country. The Blueprint will first focus on developing an assessment of the health of the plant, animal and freshwater resources of the Upper Yangtze River basin. This project also will promote ecologically compatible land use practices in the basin, which crosses four Chinese provinces.
