Overview:
The dynamic, changing landscape of Nachusa Grasslands Preserve provides a perfect opportunity for interested, committed citizens to participate in the documentation of the biological diversity of this historic restoration effort. Two centuries ago Illinois served as the start for one of the greatest exploratory endeavors undertaken on the North American continent — the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This expedition generated perhaps the most famous nature journals ever compiled during the two-year exploration of the American West. Whereas Lewis and Clark traveled thousands of miles to document the diverse American West, in the Illinois of today it is the prairie landscape that will move, evolve and diversify and the individuals who will stay put.
To aesthetically document this unique Illinois prairie restoration we will develop a “Nachusa Corps of Discovery,” consisting of individuals trained in the skills of nature photography, descriptive writing, and sketching/drawing, who can then create a total picture of Nachusa, both today and into the future.
Members of the Corps of Discovery will be trained in a series of four workshops to be held on June 5, June 19, June 26 and July 10. Download the flier for the workshops [PDF 160KB].
