Flat Ranch Preserve Announces August Programs

Meet a Karelian bear dog, learn to fly cast and more!

Macks Inn, Idaho  — August 5, 2009 — The Nature Conservancy's Flat Ranch Preserve, located just off Highway 20 near Macks Inn, continues it summer program with free events in August at the visitor center.

Just 15 miles west of West Yellowstone, a stop at Flat Ranch makes a perfect addition to a trip to Yellowstone National Park. The preserve is open to hiking, wildlife viewing, fishing and canoeing.

10 am Saturday, August 8 - Fly Fishing Casting Lessons
Join Weston Reynolds of Henry's Fork Anglers as he demonstrates the essentials of casting and the basics of fly fishing. A great program for the beginner or the experienced angler looking to improve technique.

7 pm Wednesday, August 12 - Hard-Rock Mining and Streams in Northeast Yellowstone
Join Grant Meyer for a presentation on the impacts of past mining in the New World District on Soda Butte Creek and other streams. He examines the failure of the mine tailings dam just above Cooke City in 1950.

10 am Saturday, August 15 - Jewel the Karelian Bear Dog
The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center of West Yellowstone presents an entertaining program for all ages. Meet Jewel, a Karelian bear dog, and learn about her remarkable ability to keep bears away. Great program for kids.

7 pm Wednesday, August 19 - Wetlands, Waterfowl and Invertebrates
Join wildlife biologist Jen Chutz as she explores the fascinating world of wetlands and the organisms that make up this ecosystem.

4 pm Saturday, August 22 - Annual Volunteer Barbecue
Flat Ranch staff will be hosting a barbecue for this season's volunteers.

6 pm Wednesday, August 26 - Fly Casting
Don't miss a chance to learn fly fishing from the experts. Millie, from the Trouthunter, will be giving an exciting tutorial on casting and the basic techniques of the sport to boost your confidence--and your fishing experience. A great program for both beginners and veterans.
