March 24, 2009: Key Salmon Habitat Protected in Pahsimeroi Valley
Some of the most important salmon and steelhead habitat in the Pahsimeroi River Valley will be protected and restored due to a recent conservation easement purchased by The Nature Conservancy. The conservation easement protects 1214 acres of important wetlands, wildlife habitat and agricultural land on the Big Springs Creek Ranch in the Pahsimeroi Valley.

February 19, 2008: Conservancy Asks State To Determine Source of Mercury
The Nature Conservancy has sent a letter to the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) asking to evaluate the potential sources of high mercury levels found in Silver Creek, and urging the department to take action to protect southern Idaho’s waters. The request follows research findings released by the U.S. Geological Survey in November, indicating that that brown trout in Silver Creek contained elevated mercury levels.

A study funded by The Nature Conservancy has revealed that brown trout in Silver Creek, a world famous trout fishing stream, contain elevated levels of mercury--with some fish registering levels four times higher than the amount considered safe for consumption by pregnatn women and children.

The Nature Conservancy has announced the purchase of a 160-acre conservation easement on a working cattle ranch in the Henry’s Lake area. The easement is the latest in the Conservancy’s Henry’s Lake Ranchland Protection Project, with the goal of protecting wildlife habitat and working ranches in one of the fastest growing areas in the region.
