2003 Year of the Hawaiian Forest

New Website and Calendar of Events Offered

HONOLULU, HI—April 1, 2003—The 2003 Year of the Hawaiian Forest celebrates the 100th anniversary of Hawaii’s Forest Reserve System, representing the majority of the nation’s tropical rainforest.  A new web page is available to provide updates on YHF activities and events.

The web site located at www.malamahawaii.org features upcoming special events for Year of the Hawaiian Forest. Community-wide tree planting activities, art exhibits; school-related Earth Day celebrations and watershed improvement projects and many other activities are listed.  The calendar offers direct ways to get involved through participation.

“The web site is a resource for community involvement and offers an opportunity to make a difference in our local environment,” said Pauline Sato, director of the O’ahu program, The Nature Conservancy and co-chair, Mâlama Hawaii.  The consortium of groups is a partner in the 2003 Year of the Hawaiian Forest with the Department of Land and Natural Resources/Division of Forestry and Wildlife.

Mâlama Hawaii hopes to engage the people of Hawaii as responsible caretakers of our special Island home through a collaborative public awareness partnership that links, health, environment, education, culture and our economy.

The Year of the Hawaiian Forest is a vision and an umbrella for any individual or group to contribute to existing forestry activities or create their own.  Exciting forest events are planned throughout the year to increase public awareness of and to inspire individual action in support of healthy forests.  For more information:  contact Jolie Wanger, Information and Education Specialist, DLNR/Division of Forestry and Wildlife, e-mail jolie@dofaw.net.
