September 04, 2007: Gopher frog release
Biologists released 68 gopher frog tadpoles and four newly-metamorphosed gopher frogs recently in an artificial pond at The Nature Conservancy’s Williams Bluffs Preserve in Early County. The release marks the start of a multi-year collaborative effort to establish a self-sustaining gopher frog population at the 1,980-acre preserve.

Biologists surveyed a section of Holly Creek in Murray County, Georgia, for species of imperiled freshwater mussels. The mussel survey was one phase in a continuing multi-partner effort to protect the diversity of Holly Creek – a tributary that supports the highest diversity of freshwater mussels in the Conasauga River.

July 25, 2007: The Conservancy Expands its Protection of the Chattahoochee Fall Line
As part of a regional effort to protect the natural diversity of Georgia’s Chattahoochee Fall Line region, The Nature Conservancy recently purchased 792 acres in southeastern Talbot County. Located seven miles east of Fort Benning, Blackjack Crossing is the first acquisition for The Nature Conservancy’s Chattahoochee Fall Line project and represents a significant expansion of the Conservancy’s ongoing conservation work at Fort Benning.

International Paper, The Nature Conservancy and The Conservation Fund have reached an agreement to protect 218,000 acres of forestlands across 10 states in the single largest private land conservation sale in the history of the South, and one of the largest in the nation. In Georgia, the agreement will span three counties and encompass 24,120 acres in the Altamaha River watershed, making this project the largest land conservation agreement ever completed in Georgia.
